Free Football Camp Starts Saturday

Coach Todd Walker and others from the nonviolent youth group Lifelines to Healing counsel kids away from street life.

Todd Walker has been coaching football in Berkeley for eight years. He’s helped many kids develop confidence and a sense of belonging. He also works in an Oakland mortuary. When he started seeing the kids he had coached turn up as victims, he said he knew he had to do more. Walker and 25 others from the nonviolent youth group Lifelines to Healing have started walking the streets at night, connecting with kids. “A lot of the kids I coach, I’ve had to pick up their bodies,” he said. “We just started this. We’re taking the streets back. We’re going to be talking to everybody, anybody, to stop some of this killing and get these kids back in school.” Members of Lifelines to Healing will be on hand when Walker’s ninth season coaching youth …

It was a bad Saturday night in Sacramento, but the squad still had a 29-3 season and came within a game of winning the California Division 1 championship.

The Lady Jackets started out strong, but in the end they couldn't muster the muscle to defeat Mater Dei in Sacramento Saturday night.  "Our confidence wasn't shaken, we just couldn't finish open shots. But I think the end of the game for us was when we stopped playing our defense." That's Elisha Davis speaking to MaxPreps after the game.  The final score was 57-40.  Watch the video of Coach Cheryl Draper and teammates Rachel Howard, Elisha Davis, and Jasmin Guinn. Former A's Press Officer Recalls the "Moneyball" Season

With the Oscars on today, here's a Q&A from one of the neighboring Patch's with Jim Young who remembers being inside baseball during the epic Oakland A's season pictured in the Oscar-nominated film

Between the years 2000 and 2008, Young served as Director of Public Relations for the Oakland A’s. "I was responsible for all of the team’s media relations and publicity efforts and also served as the primary liaison with the players." That means, of course, that Young was literally "inside baseball" during the epic 2002 Major League Baseball season depicted in this year's Academy Award-nominted film, "Moneyball." With the coming Oscar ceremony in mind, we asked Young about that season, and the film. His generous resposes follow. What was your role with the Oakland A’s during the “Moneyball” period, the 2002 baseball season? I caught the team at a very exciting time. During my eight years with the team, we went to the playoffs five times, …
