UC-Berkeley College of Environmental Design

Though Cal has taught architecture since Bernard Maybeck's day in the 1890s, the College of Environmental Design justMore celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010. Mocked when it was built in the 1970s, Wurster Hall incorporates green features, such as climate-controlling concrete windowshades, that were decades ahead of their time. CED has always considered the human-created environment as inseparable from its social and cultural context, and its students are not only engineering innovators but social, political and environmental innovators as well. The college offers bachelor's, masters and Ph.D. programs in architecture, landscape architecture, city and regional planning, and urban design. Facilities include a fabrication shop, demonstration garden, CAD/CAM and environmental simulation labs, an archive and library. The college also operates summer courses for people with undergraduate degrees who are thinking about graduate school at CED. Ramona's Cafe in Wurster specializes in rice bowls and custom paninis and is one of the best eateries on campus.
