The location was full of 'Classical' WHAT?????
Charles Burress (Editor) June 16, 2013 at 10:02 pm
By the "classical" location, I meant to refer to the Greek Theatre, modelled after theRead More open-air theaters of classical Greece, but I now see I probably should have found a better way to convey it.

Thank you for the explanation, Charles.
What advice would you give high school graduates?

Go to community college first and explore different subjects. OR if you already have a major passionRead More in your life, pursue that. Beware falling into a rut that simply pays the bills. Follow your joy. Don't end up doing something someone else THINKS you should be doing. Being happy and content is usually more important than earning crazy big money.

The BUSD Board of Education erred and continued the drop-out crisis in public education whenRead More selecting a new superintendent with a “Doctorate” from the Graduate School of Education at the UC Berkeley. What students need – particularly those at Berkeley High and the Alternative schools - is someone with a hands-on, working experience in a trade such as welding, plumbing, or electrical and who knows how to “clock-in” at a real job, given that not everybody goes on to “college.” Why? 75% of students have to enter the work force immediately upon high school graduation with the ability to earn a living-wage with access to health insurance. Without trade skills such enter into dead-end, low paying, no benefits jobs at Walmart or Target. This explains why the current trades workforce (commercial and private homeowner construction sites) is composed of immigrants who did learn the trades in high school and in their country. If the BUSD Board of Ed and school site administrators were composed of those from trade skills…they would never have selected a person with a PhD. This selection might make sense in a closed room of Phds, but out on the streets of reality this was a continued mistake.

I believe there are kids skipping school. I'm not saying the truancy rate is zero. But, I *know*Read More that most of my kid's absences that I excused using the "system" were not cleared. I'm talking about Dr.'s appts, sick days and even school activities that were pre-cleared by having all my child's instructors sign-off in advance that she would be gone. The system is broken when people who aren't abusing it are reaped with those who do.

I went to BHS from 2000-2001. I seldom went and the absences did not appear on the report card.Read More Calls were never made to the home. I probably should have been held back but was graduated from one class to the next. BHS- Broken? You betcha? In all honestly, it was probably for the better. I ended up getting my CHSPE (google it!) and doing a 2 year transfer to UCB.

Thank you for posting this- the graphic is really helpful. I find these numbers incrediblyRead More upsetting. I just wrote a blog post inspired by this article: http://www.berkeleyschoolsreport.com/2013/04/discipline-rates-should-not-be.html

It is most unfortunate that African American youth continue to represent the highest rates ofRead More disiplinary actions that result in suspension. As an African American man living and have grown up in Berkeley I find us all on a very slippery slope because our educational system and institution wasn't designed for African Americans or the academic success of African Americans. In addition to a system and institution where white privilige and sensibilities continues to thrive and decisions made on behalf of African Americans often effect African Americans in adverse ways.Race matters, communities of color historicly have the least amount of resources, the highest rates of crime, environmental toxins, poor housing and policed in an unconstitutional manner and the list goes on.The flip side is that there is no excusing bad behaviors especially conscience decisions knowing right from wrong.Parents must be held accountable for their childrens education and behavior inspite of some of the historical conditions that people of color who are poor and living below the poverty line.Like any effective crime reduction strategy where the common knowledge is that you can't arrest your way of of the societal problem, you must address the root of the problem and address the need. Berkeley can do better, people come from all over the world to live and vist without a clue that racial equity is an issue, lets do something about it. Scott Blake
