It amazes me that the same people are praising this man as "championing the rights of theRead More mentally ill" are also the same fools who blame Ronald Reagan for "closing" the insane asylums in California. It was Nicholas Petris' legislation that led to the "closing" of the mental institutions in California, yet, liberals never want to take responsibility for anything they do. His negative impact on California has not only been felt for years, but decades and we will never recover from his poor legislation.

He was a wonderful man and one of our favorite regulars down at the Park Avenue Grill. He will beRead More missed by us all!

Mary was truly an icon! I can readily think of a number of current business owners on Solano Avenue,Read More for instance, who were in school at Saint Mary's during her time at the school and loved her dearly. She drove the coolest red Mustang fastback, and as one former teacher noted, "I think Mary could have given one of our students 200 detentions and he still would have said "Thank you, Mrs. Woodson." Mary was a longtime active member of St. Jerome Parish in El Cerrito, and her nearly-annual attendance at the Saint Mary's Crab Feed kept her busy with dozens of alumni and parents coming to her table to visit. She tried to attend the many alumni reunions that she was invited to, and was always the star of the show. I had the personal pleasure of having her as part of my own family; my parents and the Woodsons share a grandson, and it was Mary who recommended me for my first job here at Saint Mary's nearly forty years ago. A friend said at her passing that he always sensed Mary was "on loan from heaven." So true. We were all blessed by her life. Her reward in heaven will, indeed, be great.

Jeff's passing is a huge loss for California, Berkeley, and the engaged academic community,Read More especially all whose inquiry focuses on California. He played a larger than life role with humor, verve, and integrity and will be deeply missed.

Oh, how sad. I remember Jeff well from my undergrad days at UC Berkeley ('74-'78) when he was aRead More guest speaker in political economy classes, among others. Isn't his brother Steve the high-level UCB administrator?

I returned from the candlelight vigil a few hours ago and it was one of the most profoundRead More experiences. There were hundreds of people there and the love for Henry was palpable. An uplifting experience.

I was really at loss for words when I heard my daughter's college lost a student. I understand veryRead More well that most students in Cal or other competitive colleges have been under a lot of stress from academic, financial, social, health and career pot holes. I just hope very much that students including my daughter just try your best in whatever academic field you will be. There is no definition for BEST. BEST is always capped by one's health and available resources. Any grades can be the BEST grade when someone did try his or her best and be happy with it and don't compare with anyone. BEST life will always face pot holes and only through these process we know to treasure people and things around you and be happy and humble in any ups and downs in life.

Wow, good to know. Especially since I'm a Dali fan. It's one of those things...love CD? Don't readRead More the liner notes...well back when there were CDs and liner notes

(For what it's worth, Salvador Dali, who was at one point quite a real artist himself, alsoRead More supervised a mass production "art" factory. Dali's scam was more reprehensible, because, unlike Kincade, Dali went to pains to disguise the provenance of his late-career work, the only direct production of which he participated in was adding his signature.)
dave blake April 10, 2012 at 06:34 pm
My best wishes to the Kincade family, and my commiseration to the world of actual art that this longRead More trial has finally come to an end.

The appropriate priorities of a city government is to ensure public safety, maintain infrastructureRead More (in this case, roads and sewers), and build and maintain community amenities (parks, libraries). In Berkeley's case, the BUSD is responsible for the state of the schools, so the City of Berkeley doesn't have to worry about providing primary and secondary education; it only needs to get out of BUSD's way. Berkeley's budget is bloated. It has way more workers than necessary when compared to similar sized Bay Area cities, like Hayward. The City needs to be honest with its citizens about the budget. I don't think that it has met this essential threshold.

I agree 100% with JHolland. It is also way too easy for "the homeless" in Berkeley. TheyRead More have plenty of resources. Today I saw a woman give a "homeless" guy in front of Cheeseboard area a bunch of dollars. Then he got on his CELL PHONE and starting chatting away, sitting there begging and waiving his hand. We have professional "homeless" who--over 20 years later--are still out there on Shattuck, Solano, and Telegraph Ave just taking up space. If the City is going to fund homeless/indigent projects, let's see some of the newly foreclosed and WORKING poor get the help. They are the ones who deserve our compassion.

Get out of...what...California? Say it ain't so Tonto! There's no place like Cali!

Hey Dan, thanks for your comment. Are there any stories you remember about Hamid that you care toRead More share?
Dan McMullan February 15, 2012 at 05:09 am
Hamid was a great man and comforting presence on the Ave. He loved his wife and two boys and I feelRead More deeply the loss of this good soul . Our community benifited from his good deeds and we will sorely miss him.

RE: "Deborah Krow, who lives in the neighborhood, stopped by the vigil during a nighttime walkRead More with her husband. Krow said she had tried to get a stop sign installed at Marin and Tulare years earlier, but was told by police that a certain number of injuries needed to take place there before that action would be considered." So where is the scorekeeper's figure now? How many more must die?

The City of Berkeley has lost a wonderful man and tireless advocate for quality education for theRead More children of this city. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Though Terry might be gone, he will not soon be forgotten.

My 8 week old IPod Classic went kaput last night. I was listening to a Podcast on the way home andRead More it just stopped and went black. It was fully charged and when I plugged it back in nothing happened. It is the only Apple product I own. Maybe Mr. Jobs is recalling it as being defective. I need a new computer, but I guess I'll buy another Dell PC
