lillie b. the nurses are not paid enough. they should earn more - they are the best and just askRead More me having been a patient many more times than I wish to say

The Sutter spokeswoman is quoted as referring to nurses' disregard for patients and the community.Read More This is ludicrous. How do I, as a patient, benefit from being treated by a nurse who has had to come to work sick because the right to paid sick leave has been eliminated? As a patient, I see my interests aligned with those of nurses struggling for adequate nurse-to-patient ratios and health insurance for nurses, not with those of corporate executives and their shills.

Not much residential down that way, so why couldn't it be open until even later, particularly duringRead More warmer weather? Great idea.

I am wishing David all the best in his new digs--it's really tough running any kind of bookstoreRead More with the seemingly diminished readerships out there from online sources, etc. I work for his 'competition' at Dark Carnival at the Escapist Comics Bookstore and used to be the manager of Comic Relief the bookstore in Berkeley which went belly up in 2011. Bookstore owners have a tough row to hoe these days.

The biggest challenge for stores on the east side of Shattuck is that the foot-traffic isRead More significantly less than on the west side. That is my impression. THere are a lot of older apartments that have garages on the first level and nothing of real interest to people who want to stroll or window-shop.

"A nickel saved is a nickel earned" just doesn't sound the same.

I have actually tried to back out of this What's For Work Promotion because I have taken theRead More volunteer route for finding a job. When I tried to do that from their website, I was sent to a page that was down. Hm. (I will try that again.) When I sent a message to the email address that Patch provided, it was ignored. I don't want them to try and charge me once the free trial period is up, and I consider this my third attempt to detach myself from this program. Patch? Can you help me with this?

That could be part of it, but we think a big part of it is still the hesitation on the proprietor'sRead More side. Starting a new business is very risky. The upfront costs to build a new retail/restaurant business is significant and most require outside financing. Most businesses won't earn a profit until the third year so you have to be able to survive that, and that doesn't sound very appealing to most people. I have seen a lot of spaces where the rent does seem too high to build a profitable business, but I suspect that some businesses wouldn't even make a profit if their rent was reduced in half or more. There are so many other costs and rent is just one. For some businesses like restaurants its usually about 10% of revenues. We think if the community weighed in on what they actually want, it might help convince some of these proprietors and their investors/lenders to move forward.

I suspect that the reason for the continued vacancy in this (and some of the other spots which youRead More have featured in this occasional query) has more to do with questions of the rents and other issues with the landlords than with the lack of initiatives to open new retail stores.
