In an emergency, Berkeley residents can dial 911 from a landline or 510-981-5911 from a cell phone. The City of Berkeley Police Department recommends that cell phone users call 510-981-5911 because it will transfer their calls directly to the Communications Center in Berkeley, where help can be dispatched more quickly. Cell phone calls to 911 are directly routed to the nearest California Highway Patrol dispatch center, and then transferred to the appropriate local law enforcement agency.
