Nelson Mandela Memorial Gathering at Cal Saturday
A memorial gathering in honor of Nelson Mandela – South Africa's anti-apartheid leader and first black President, who died Dec. 5 at age 95 – will be held on UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza Saturday, 3-5 p.m.
A community memorial gathering in honor of Nelson Mandela will be held at UC Berkeley this Saturday, Dec. 14, the campus announced Thursday.
Mandela, South Africa’s first black president and the leader of a decades-long struggle against apartheid, died in Johannesburg on Thursday last week at age 95.
The memorial gathering will take place on Sproul Plaza, at Telegraph Avenue and Bancroft Way, from 3-5 p.m.
The university said speakers and performers will include:
- State Assembly Speaker John Pérez
- UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks
- Pastor Michael McBride, founder of Berkeley’s Way Christian Center
Gabby Shuman and Marcel Jones, Black Student Union - Music by Kev Choice, Rico Pabon, Rasheed Shabazz and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir
