Mackenzie "Mackie" McDonald, an 18-year-old from Piedmont who trains at the Claremont tennis club and who's been struggling a bit recently in junior tennis tournaments, is making national headlines in sports news today, Sunday.

McDonald snagged a wild card and then defeated two top-100 players in two days — Saturday and today (Sunday) — to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters, according to an article in USA Today.

McDonald plans to enter UCLA this fall and wore a Bruins cap Sunday as he defeated Steve Johnson 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

McDonald completed his last two years of high school via online courses. He has trained since he was 11 with Wayne Ferreira, director of tennis at The Club at the Claremont Hotel, Club & Spa in Berkeley.
