Cal's New Football Coach Offers Inside Look at His World – On and Off Field

Sonny Dykes, the new coach tasked with pulling the University of California at Berkeley football team out of the doldrums, talks in this UC-produced video about his home life and his ideas for nurturing champion players.

Sonny Dykes, the man that UC Berkeley football fans are hoping will jolt the Bears out of hibernation, talks in the accompanying video about his life and his philosophy as he prepares for his maiden voyage as the head coach facing a line-up of tough opponents this season.

Dykes, who led a dramatic turnaround at Louisiana Tech, was hired in December to replace fired head coach Jeff Tedford, whose early successes in his 11 season with the Bears succumbed to losing years, including last season's anti-climatic 3-9 record.

"Sonny Dykes is one of the brightest offensive minds in the country, running a high-octane style of football, one that I'm certain will allow our student-athletes to thrive and that our community will love on game day," Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said in the statement when Dykes was hired.

The Bears play their season opener at home on Aug. 31 against Northwestern, ranked 22nd in the AP's preseason poll. Two weeks later, Cal plays its first away game against No. 2-ranked Ohio State.
