Cal Bears Mauled 44-22 by Cougars from Washington State

Saturday brought disappointment to Bears fans as UC Berkeley lost a home game 44-22 to the Washington State Cougars, though fans of passing got to see more than 1,000 yards of completed passes by the two quarterbacks combined.

On the positive side, the UC Berkeley football team narrowed its margin of loss today, Saturday, to 22 points, down from last weekend's 55-16 trouncing by the Oregon Ducks.

The loss to number 2 Oregon was not a surprise, but today's 44-22 home-game fall to the Washington State Cougars – whom the Bears defeated in their previous eight contests – threw cold water on hopes for a turn-around season for the now 1-4 Bears in their first year under new coach Sonny Dykes.

It was Washington State's highest-scoring Pac-12 conference game in 10 years, ESPN reported.

One bright note for the Bears was that freshman quarterback Jared Goff threw for 489 yards, his third 400-yards-plus passing game.

Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 521 yards and three touchdowns.

We thank Nick Sebastian for his report from the game and the accompanying photo of Cougars receiver Vince Mayle about to score on a 72-yard pass from Halliday in the third quarter.
