'Westbrae Biergarten' Preparing to Move from Drawing Board to Gilman St.

Construction will start soon on the proposed outdoor "Westbrae Biergarten" at Gilman and Curtis streets in North Berkeley, one of the partners said this week.

The proposed "Westbrae Biergarten" has finally received the green light from the City of Berkeley and plans to start construction soon for its outdoor beer garden with food trucks at Gilman and Curtis streets, according to one of the venture's partners.

"Finally got our permit from the city – yay!" co-owner Linda Lasagna told Patch Tuesday. "So construction will begin sometime soon."

The plan includes an anchor tenant, Brazil Cafe, whose menu will include beer and wine, plus food trucks yet to be determined, Lasagna said. "We're looking to do a variety."

The lot will include picnic tables, and a natural-gas fire will burn in a central pit, she said. Two ADA-compliant restrooms will be installed too, she said.

The partners include Lasagna's husband Carl and his brother Larry. Their grandfather, Antonio Lasagna, founded Westbrae Nursery next door to the beer garden site, which sits at 1280 Gilman St. with the overhead BART tracks on the other side.

Construction progress will depend on the weather, but the partners are "looking to a spring opening – March-ish, I hope," Lasagna said.
