Organic Pecan Pie Takes a Bow on Solano Avenue

Cafeina is offering three organic pies for the Thanksgiving season: two varieties of pumpkin and a pecan made without corn syrup.

Here’s some news for discerning fans of pecan pie.

The proprietor of Cafeina Organic Cafe at 1389 Solano Ave. in Albany is baking organic pies for the Thanksgiving season, including pecan made without the corn syrup found in almost every pecan pie recipe.

Why eliminate corn syrup?

“Because it’s highly processed,” said Maria Meyers. “Karo syrup is one of the worse things you can put in your body.”

Instead she uses organic maple syrup (prepared in a way to retain its anti-oxidents), brown rice syrup, honey and agave to add the sweetness.

The recipe came from a customer and fellow baker, Connie, who recently moved to Boston, Myers said.

Also on the holiday pie menu are pumpkin custard pie and pumpkin spice.

Whole pies are available for $45 for the pecan and $27 each for two types of pumpkin. A slice of the pecan goes for $6, and the pumpkin for $5.50.
