What Advice Do You Have for Newcomers to Berkeley?

What do you wish someone told you when you first moved here?

This is the time of year when Berkeley sees its annual influx of new arrivals. It’s not just undergrads arriving on our shores. It’s grad students, professors, teachers, spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends, and folks not even directly connected to the rhythms of the university.

Even in this era of smart phones, newcomers still have simple questions that apps can’t always answer. Where’s the best place to buy a new bike? How tough of a lock should I get for my new bike? Where do I go for used furniture and groceries? What’s the best trail to run in those hills? Do I have to worry about mountain lions? Why is it so cold in August?

Do you remember when you first arrived in Berkeley? What advice and tips would you offer the newest Berkeleyans?
