New Buzz Around Berkeley: Schools to Get Beehives

Berkeley has plans to put beehives in all of the city's middle schools. What do you think of the plan to teach students about bees?

Berkeley middle schools are set to receive beehives as part of the Edible Schoolyard Project's Bee Experimental Education in Schools (BEES) program, Berkeleyside reported Friday.

King Middle School's one-acre garden has recently started to buzz. It received a swarm of Russian bees six weeks ago, according to the article.

"The goal of BEES is to put beehives into every Berkeley public middle school, and integrate bee pollination education into hands-on gardening programs," according to an Edible Schoolyard posting on Patch.

Further, the purpose of the new program is to teach students the important role bees play in food production.

Schools should get the hives by next spring.
