The Emeryville school board has approved John Rubio, currently an
assistant superintendent in Santa Cruz, to be the school district's new
School board members said the process to select Rubio was rigorous
and included collaboration with community members, parents, teachers, local
elected officials and union leaders.
They said Rubio, an assistant superintendent for the Live Oak
School District in Santa Cruz, beat out more than 60 other applicants for the
Emeryville school officials said Rubio has been an educator for
more than 20 years, beginning his career as a bilingual middle school teacher
in Compton and then serving as a teacher and principal in San Francisco,
where he later was in charge of educational technology.
Rubio said in a statement, "At my core, I was and remain a strong
teacher. It affects everything I do and perceive."
Rubio said, "I look forward to learning as much as I can, as fast
as I can, and to working together with our district teachers, our union
leadership, parents and the school board toward improving our school
Rubio will begin his new job in Emeryville on July 1.
