Berkeley High School juniors feel significantly safer at school than the average for Alameda County and for California at a whole, according to recently released results of state surveys.

The surveys, conducted from 2008 to 2010, found that 5 percent of Berkeley High 11th graders felt unsafe or very unsafe at school, compared to 9.1 percent for Alameda County as a whole and 6.8 percent for California.

The figure leapt to 15.6 percent in the Oakland school district and 19.6 percent in Hayward.

That’s just one comparison gleaned from a mountain of new information released on a website that gathers data on California’s youth

Drawing from a variety of sources, including the California Healthy Kids Survey and the state Department of Education, the website kidsdata.org aims to promote “the health and well being of children by making trustworthy information easily accessible.”

Kidsdata is a project of the Lucile Packard Foundation For Children's Health.
