Berkeley High senior Anaiya Olivares is among the 1,000 students nationwide selected to receive a coveted Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers costs through graduation, including graduate school, at a college or university of the recipient's choice.

"This is one of the most prestigious scholarships you can receive in our entire nation," school board President Karen Hemphill said in presenting a certificate of recognition to Olivares at the May 22 board meeting. "It is an incredible honor and recognition to achieve this."

Olivares thanked the school board and applauding audience for recognizing the honor and said she plans to attend UC Berkeley and pursue studies in science.

Her mother, Latuise Newton-Olivares, also offered brief remarks, saying, "I am so proud of Anaiya. She has always been self-sufficient, always been a hard worker encouraging others, and she enlightens others to do well within themselves. If not, she'll step in and lend a hand. ... I appreciate the woman she has become today."
