Assistant Superintendent Announces Retirement

Neil Smith says goodbye after 25 years with the Berkeley Public Schools

The Assistant Superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School District announced at the March 12 school board meeting that he would be retiring after 25 years of service.

During the meeting, Superintendent Donald Evans thanked Neil Smith for his service and described Smith as "beloved and dedicated" as he confirmed Smith's retirement.

"This is extremely difficult for me because he has been my right hand and I truly do not know what I would have done without him as I transitioned into Berkeley," Evans said in the video.

Smith said his tenure with the school district has been "25 wonderful years" and called Berkeley a "very, very good fit" for him. Smith will retire from his post in four months.
