In a letter to parents Friday, Piedmont High School’s principal revealed the existence of a “Fantasy Slut League” where varsity athletes collected points for sexual activity with female classmates.
"It has been reported that students on some of our Varsity Teams have set up a "Fantasy Slut League" in which our female students (unbeknownst to most of them) are drafted as part of the league," Principal Rich Kitchens' letter said. "Male students earn points for documented engagement in sexual activities with female students."
The letter failed to specify what teams participated in the practice, only that “over the past 5-6 years such a league has existed in one form or another as part of ‘bonding’ for some Varsity Teams during their seasons of sport.”
Commenters on Piedmont Patch identifying themselves as current and former students argued that the sexual activity would have happened even if the league never existed. “What the Parents need to understand is that you should be blaming the parties your 15-18 year old daughters go to not the league,” wrote someone who claimed to be a recent alum of the school.
Other commenters were dismayed by the principal's claim that the participating students now know the league was wrong because the possibility of discipline may damage their prospects when it's time to apply for college. "It is incredibly SAD that PHS students are most concerned about how this might affect their college applications and NOT that they regret harming another child," wrote a mother of two children in Piedmont schools.
The principal’s letter noted that the idea behind the league “was not unique to Piedmont High School.” What do you think? Could something like the Fantasy Slut League be part of Berkeley's high school athlete culture? Are parents and guardians too permissive when it comes to alcohol at high school parties?
