5 Budget-Friendly Ways to Keep Bored Kids Busy on Spring Break

5 easy, fun, and budget-friendly ways to have a "stay-cation" with kids on Spring Break.

Spring break is finally here, the time your kids have been anxiously waiting for since their return back to school after the winter holidays… that is, until the boredom sets in.

“Mommmmm, I’m BORED!”

Sure, the zoo is fun, and the amusement parks might be calling their names; but factor in the cost of lunch and parking and it can end up being quite expensive. As exciting as it is to get out and enjoy the local attractions, the price can quickly add up.

Here’s a few fun ways to have a mini “stay-cation” with kids over spring break.

Spring Cleaning

Ok, I know what you’re thinking… cleaning sounds like the opposite of fun, right?

Well, kids don't have to know that! When it comes to getting them to help out, it’s all in your pitch.

Trying to get them to clean out their closets? Tell kids that for every toy or outfit that they donate, they make room for something new.

Kids can enjoy helping with simple tasks like wiping down mirrors and tables by making it into a contest. The first one to finish their chore wins a prize of your choosing.

Bring out the Craft Supplies

When in doubt, break out the crayons.

Keep a small bin full of art supplies on hand in case of a boredom emergency.

Brightly colored paper, glue sticks, glitter, and pipe cleaners can keep kids busy for hours.

Give them a project (butterflies, ladybugs, flowers, etc.) and see if they can create a collage of what they are most excited for this spring.

Use your Imagination & Play!

Nothing is more powerful than a child's imagination. Let them lead the way and teach you their favorite ways to play.

Create an original stage production complete with costumes, build a fort of pillows and blankets, or just visit the local park and get some energy out.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that!

Movie Night

It doesn’t get much simpler (and cheaper) than this!

Grab a new flick from Red Box or see what’s trending on Netflix, turn off the lights and gather the family around the TV to create a real theater experience.

Pop up some popcorn on the stove or in the microwave and prepare some sweet snacks like yogurt-covered raisions or frozen fruit to snack on. Much healthier than the movie theater versions!

Nature Adventure

What better time to explore the local flora and fauna than the beginning of spring?

Create a nature scavenger hunt at a local forest preserve or nature conservatory with such items as pinecones, turtles, tulips, and whatever is indigenous to your area. The first one to finish their list wins something special!
