The obesity epidemic in America has been well-documented.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight and half of overweight people are obese (one-third of the adult population overall).

A new study has the latest figures on the obesity rates in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. They are both below the national numbers.

Diet and exercise are obvious solutions to this problem. Walking is considered one of the best ways to get daily exercise because it's easy to do, it can be done by most age groups and it's relatively injury-free.

With that in mind, we thought we'd take a look this week at homes for sale that are within walking distance of shopping centers, schools, parks and other facilities.

Overall, Berkeley has a walkability rating from walkscore.com of 82. The site lists three zip codes within the city as particularly walkable. It also notes Berkeley is quite easy to bicycle around.

This one-bedroom, one-bathroom home at 1824 5th St. has a walkability rating of 86. It's listed at $1.6 million and is described as being in a "garden setting." It's also close to University Avenue.

Do you know of any other homes on the market that are in a good location for walking. Let us know in the comments.
