Where's the Best Place to Spend St. Patrick's Day?

From an upscale celebration at the Japanese bar Ippuku to a more casual bash at Brennan's -- where's the best place to spend the day honoring the heritage of Berkeley's namesake?

More than 5,000 miles from Ireland, America honors St. Patrick's Day as a celebration of its Irish roots. In addition to donning green, getting your Riverdance on, and enjoying a bowl of stew, custom dictates that March 17 involve at least a little — and often too much — drinking.

Why? Legend has it that St. Patrick introduced the process of distilling to Ireland in the fifth century AD, prompting the birth of Ireland's spirited heritage.

So, whether you plan to honor St. Paddy in the traditional way with a whiskey at a local pub, or add a stylish twist on the day with a cocktail at an upscale restaurant, Berkeley is the place to be. After all, the city is named after an Irishman — George Berkeley, born in 1685 near Kilkenny.
