What Does Tunnel Road Need More: Parking or Bike Lanes?
Bicycle advocates worry the city will bow to neighborhood pressure and put parking over bike lanes.
Bicycle advocates are expecting neighborhood resistance to painting bike lanes on two uphill stretches of Tunnel Road in Berkeley.
According to the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, city officials aren’t replacing on-street parking with a bike lane on Tunnel Road between Domingo and the entrance to the Claremont Hotel in anticipation of neighborhood ire over the loss of parking.
The EBBC also claims that the city might allow residents to vote on whether or not a parking lane on Tunnel Road above the Uplands should be replaced with a buffered bike lane. The EBBC does not expect the vote to go in favor of the bike lane.

“The City needs to hear from us that the bike lane is a priority and that safe bike access is not a popularity contest, but rather an obligation the City has to make it's streets safe for bicycling and to encourage more residents to try bicycling.”
In April of last year, a bicyclist wearing a helmet cam recorded a hit-and-run on Tunnel Road.
