West Berkeley Council District Urged

A commentary by Curtis Manning urges that Berkeley's redrawing of City Council districts consolidate West Berkeley into one district. The city redraws the district boundaries every 10 years to account for shifts in population.

Should West Berkeley be united into one City Council district?

In a commentary published by the Berkeley Daily Planet, Curtis Manning urges support for a new district representing West Berkeley as a "community of interest."

The city is required by law to redraw Berkeley's eight council districts every 10 years to address changes in population. Members of the public were invited to submit proposed new district boundaries by March 15.

All proposals are scheduled to be posted on the city's website on April 25, and the first public hearing by the City Council on proposals for the new districts is scheduled for May 7. A timeline of the steps in the process is available on the city's website.

Manning says the proposed District 1 map endorsed by the Berkeley Neighborhood Council at its March 9 meeting includes everything west of San Pablo Avenue but that north of University Avenue it extends east to pick up Councilwoman Linda Maio just below Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

The rules for redrawing districts in the City Charter require that districts be equal in population and that no council member be "drawn out" of his or her district.
