Students Going Door-to-Door in Berkeley Today for Healthcare Plan

A group of students called the "CoveredBerkeley Brigade" are going to homes in Berkeley today to let residents know about new health insurance options under Covered California, the state program under the U.S. Affordable Care Act.

You may see students knocking on doors in Berkeley today, Saturday, to talk about the state's healthcare plan.

They're part of a local initiative for "spreading the good news of availability of Covered California insurance programs to uninsured residents, and the availability of insurance subsidies to other low income and middle class residents," according to a statement from Berkeley Councilman Kriss Worthington's office.

California is one of the states that has its own program, called Covered California, for implementing the U.S. Affordable Care Act, also referred to as Obamacare.

The students call themselves the "CoveredBerkeley Brigade."

"While the US House of Representatives keeps voting to undermine ObamaCare, we are going door to door to make sure that residents learn what is available to them," the group's founder, Andrew Wong, said in a statement. "It would be tragic to have uninsured residents not get Medi-Cal now that they legally qualify. It would also be sad for middle class residents not to get the financial help now available through Covered California."
