Event Today: UC Berkeley Celebrates Passage of Dream Act

Bay Area undocumented students, otherwise known as DREAMers, will conduct a press conference Monday to applaud Governor Jerry Brown for passing AB 131 — also known as the Dream Act.

“AB 131 is an investment in our state's future,” said Brown.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau has been invited, as well as UC Berkeley ASUC President Vishalli Loomba, ASUC External Affairs Vice President Joey Freeman, RISE at UC Berkeley, Bay Area DREAM Act Coalition, CalSERVE, and community members.

Official Host: Rising Immigrant Scholars through Education (RISE) at UC Berkeley
Co-Sponsor: Bay Area DREAM Act Coalition, CalSERVE

FURTHER INFORMATION ON AB 131:
The California DREAM Act AB 131 will allow undocumented students who qualify for the AB-540 in-state tuition waiver to participate in-state funded financial aid programs such as:

- The Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver program at all state Community Colleges;
- Student Aid programs administered by the UC’s and CSU’s derived from tuition-based revenues;
- Cal Grants for an estimated 2,500 undocumented AB-540 students. The overall Cal Grant program is funded at $1.4 billion, meaning that only 1% of
all Cal Grant funds will be potentially impacted by AB 131 when the law goes into effect.
- Lastly, provisions of AB 131 will not go into effect until January 1, 2013.
