Does California Have Money with Your Name on It?

Check to see if you may have money, diamonds or canned meats that you didn't know you had lost.

Are you missing some money or maybe a bag of loose diamonds? How about an old can of sardines? If so, California Controller John Chiang's office wants you to claim them. In fact, $6 billion in unclaimed property and cash has been turned in to the controller's office.

The Caliornia State Conroller's website states that "California's Unclaimed Property Law requires corporations, businesses, associations, financial institutions, and insurance companies (referred to as 'Holders') to annually report and deliver property to the California State Controller's Office after there has been no activity on the account or contact with the owner for a period of time specified in the law."

According to the State of California, the most common types of unclaimed property includes bank accounts, estates, certificated of deposits, stocks or uncashed cashier's checks or money orders.

The website also includes photos of "unusual unclaimed property" items like a signed photo of Neil Armstrong, gold bars, jewelry, a police badge collection and an old can of sardines.

Anyone can search the state's database. Click here to see if you have unclaimed property.

Did you recover any of your property or money using that state website? Tell us in the comments — and if the diamonds or sardines are yours, we want a pic!

Everyone should run their name through this database. There are thousands of listings for people and businesses in Alameda. I got about $70 back from the garbage company. My significant other and his brother got money that was due to their parents. I've found money due to friends also. I even found about $15,000 due to someone that I know that is evil, but karma whispered in my ear to be quiet.

The name is weirdly spelled, but not this weird. It's Caffe, not Caffee. I've only typed these wordsRead More a thousand times.

I could blame those cut-ups, typographers in the basement typing onto big circular steel plates
