Bates Bets on Bears, Bourbon vs. Cabernet

Berkeley's mayor is putting 10 bottles of Narsai David California Cabernet Sauvignon on the line for the Cal women's basketball team, which faces the University of Louisville in an NCAA Final Four game on Sunday.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates' ofice issued the following press release Thursday morning:

Mayor Tom Bates is betting some of Berkeley’s finest wine that the Cal Bears Women’s basketball team will prevail over the Louisville Cardinal in their final four NCAA basketball showdown this Sunday.

If the Louisville Cardinal should prevail, Bates has promised to ship 10 bottles of Narsai David premium California Cabernet Sauvignon to Louisville Mayor Greg Fisher.  A Bears’ victory, on the other hand, means Mayor Bates will receive 10 bottles of Kentucky bourbon from the Louisville Mayor.

This is the first final four appearance for the very talented number 2-seeded Cal Bear team.  Cal advanced to its first Final Four with a 65-62 overtime victory on Monday over the University of Georgia, which upset No. 1 Stanford University last weekend.

Mayor Bates is very confident in his alma mater, stating: “All bets are on and I can already taste the bourbon now!”
