Appeal of Safeway Expansion Delayed to Nov. 13

The Rockridge Community Planning Council and a group of Berkeley residents are appealing the Oakland Planning Commission's approval of Safeway's College Avenue Shopping Center project to the Oakland City Council.

An Oakland City Council hearing on an appeal of Safeway's plans for expansion at 6310 College Ave. has been postponed to the council's Nov. 13 meeting, according to the office of Councilmember Jane Brunner.

The project, which would include restaurant and retail space as well as a larger supermarket at College and Claremont avenues, was approved by the Oakland Planning Commission in July. The Rockridge Communty Planning Council and a group of Berkeley residents who live near the store are appealing that decision.

Opponents of the project have cited potential traffic and parking problems and a threat to nearby small businesses.
