Another Unhealthy Air Alert Monday – No Wood Burning

It may be the one of the worst cold snaps in the Bay Area in years, but air quality officials are banning wood fires again on Monday, the second day in a row, because of unhealthy air pollution levels.

By David Mills

Bay Area air quality officials have declared another Winter Spare the Air alert for Monday, for the second day in row, meaning no wood fires during the current unusually cold weather.

It's the sixth such winter alert that Bay Area Air Quality Management District officials have declared this season.

Air quality officials said the region's cold weather has allowed air pollution – in form of particulate matter – to rise to unhealthy levels.

The Monday alert prohibits Bay Area residents from burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors for 24 hours. Those who have no other source of heat are exempt.

First-time violators of the ban are given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class or paying a $100 fine. Second violations result in a $500 fine and the penalties rise with each violation after that.
