Victim's Name Released in Berkeley Killing

The man who was fatally shot near 8th and Page streets in Berkeley late Sunday afternoon was Anthony Medearis, 22, of Berkeley, Berkeley police said late tonight, Tuesday.

Berkeley police tonight, Tuesday, released the name of the man who was shot to death late Sunday afternoon near Page and 8th streets in the city.

He was 22-year-old Berkeley resident Anthony Medearis, according to police.


Police so far have released few details about the crime or possible suspects.

After the shooting on Sunday, police said they began receiving reports at 5:43 p.m. of multiple gunshots in the 1400 block of 8th Street.

Responding officers fond the victim near 8th and Page Street, police said. He was transported by the Berkeley Fire Department to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Officer Jennifer Coats.

It was the city's fourth homicide this year.

On Aug. 1, 24-year-old Dustin Bynum of Berkeley was shot and killed in the 1800 block of San Pablo Avenue.

A 26-year-old Berkeley resident, Jermaine Davis, was fatally shot in the 1800 block of Derby Street on July 17.

In the city's first homicide of the year, Zontee Jones, 34, was fatally shot at San Pablo Avenue and Delaware Street on Feb. 4.
