The person killed in an apparent hit and run accident on University Avenue in Berkeley early this morning, Monday, was a 46-year-old homeless man, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau.

The man's name was not released because next of kin have not been notified, coroner's Deputy D. Sanchez told Patch tonight. (The Coroner's Bureau is part of the Sheriff's Department.)

A Berkeley police officer on patrol found the body of a male on the roadway about 5:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of University west of 6th Street as the roadway begins to rise into an elevated overpass that goes over Interstate 80, according to Berkeley Police Officer Jennifer Coats.

Fire Department personnel summoned to the scene said the man was dead, Coats said.

A preliminary investigation indicated the man had been hit by an unknown vehicle, Coats said.
