Just days after signing with the New York Knicks, former UC Berkeley basketball star Jason Kidd was arrested on a drunk driving charge.
Police said that Kidd's 2010 Cadillac Escalade struck a telephone pole and went into the woods in Water Mill, not far from his Southampton house on Long Island. Police responded at 1:56 a.m.
Kidd, 39, was alone in the car, according to police. He was transported to Southampton Hospital for minor injuries and released into police custody.
Kidd was arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge on Sunday morning in Southampton Town Justice Court and released on his own recognizance.
Kidd, one of the best point guards in the NBA, signed a three-year, $9.5 million deal with the Knicks on Thursday.
He won a championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 — in fact police said his address is still listed as Dallas, Texas. He has also played with the Phoenix Suns and New Jersey Nets.
This is not Kidd's first brush with the law. He was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge in Jan. 2001, when he was married to his former wife Joumana. They divorced in 2007.
Kidd is now married to Porschla Coleman, a former model.
Kidd bought a house last year in Water Mill for a reported $5.97 million.
