UC Police Log, May 8-10

Campus police seek a lone suspect in a Gayley Road armed robbery.

Monday, May 7

11:41 a.m. – Police cited a 28-year-old woman for domestic battery at the UVA Early Head Start.

4:53 p.m. - A 39-year-old man reported indecent exposure at the Haas Clubhouse Pool. Police are seeking a 40-year-old white male, skinny, bald, clean cut, possibly wearing white shorts.

5:20 p.m. – Police arrested Sean Van Pelt for three Berkeley Police Department misdemeanor warrants.

8:32 p.m. -- A 30-year-old man reported being the victim of an armed robbery on Gayley Road in front of the Greek Theater. Taken was a burgundy color Samsung laptop. Suspect is a black man 18 to 20 years old with a medium complexion, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall, medium build, a short afro, no facial hair, black long sleeve hooded sweatshirt, green sweat pants. Under investigation.

Tuesday, May 8

9:48 a.m. -- A man reported vandalism, via unknown means, to his silver 2009 Mazda 5, Lic. No. 6GZF307, in the parking lot of the Botanical Gardens.

11:13 a.m. -- A woman reported the theft of a catalytic converter from the RSF garage. Under investigation.

4:12 p.m. -- A female student, 18, reported receiving harassing text messages in front of 2299 Piedmont Avenue. The suspect is a Hispanic male, 18, student. Under investigation.

5:00 p.m. - Assisted the Berkeley Police Department with a battery investigation at Dwight Way and Telegraph Avenue.

10:24 p.m. - A man reported the burglary of his light blue 2009 Honda Lic. No. Fit6GFE549, Lower Hearst, of an Apple iPad 2 value of $1000. Under investigation.

Wednesday, May 9

4:50 a.m. -- The UC fire marshall and the Berkeley Police Department responded to a fire in the press box, Memorial Stadium. Under investigation.

12:32 PM – UC police found a black Alienware laptop computer, Hewlett Packard zip drive and a black soft sided case at a bus stop at Haste Street and Telegraph Avenue. Confiscated the items for safekeeping.

3:15 p.m. – An employee was the victim of a public disturbance with threats made to entice a fight on Gill Tract at the Jackson Street gate. UVA. Under investigation. Police plan to obtain a warrant against the 18-year-old man.

3: 30 PM – An employee reported the grand theft of his silver Apple Macbook Pro laptop, 1801 Walnut St. Oxford tract.

5:32 PM - A man reported an auto burglary from his grey 2010 4-door Honda via window smash, Coffer Dam. Black and yellow backpack with laptop and iPhone taken. Later recovered at Rockridge Bart.

11:50 p.m. – Police arrested Nicole Duncan, 45, for possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia southeast of Rockridge BART. Booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Thursday, May 10

1:10 a.m. – A man reported the theft of his black Specialized bicycle valued at $750 in front of Crossroads.

11:41 a.m. – Police arrested Eric Lloyd, 48, for violation of probation at People’s Park.

11:44 a.m. Police arrested Edward Choate, 36, for a $5,000 misdemeanor arrest.

10 p.m. – Police received report of a possible prowler on the 2700 block of Hillegass Avenue.

This is very interesting. I bicycle and walk a lot around Berkeley. I think i know exactly whatRead More signal is being referred to the walk sign across Bancroft at MLK specifically will reset itself. many of the walk signals rely on induction loops which are loops placed in the ground that can detect Bicycles and Cars when the Bicycles or cars pass over them disrupting the current. You can often see these loops as they look like hexagonal saw cuts in the ground. Anyways the intersection detects traffic with these devices & if it doesn't detect anything then it assumes nothing is there and gives right of way to the major throughway in this case being MLK. So the reason the counter to cross Bancroft resets itself is totally logical because the intersection suspects no one is there and since that side of Bancroft is more or less residential there would be no point in setting that intersection to a timer where it gives priority to one light then the other & switches based on that & not on wether it detects any bicycles or cars passing over the induction loops. Also this is Berkeley and we are rather quirky and always have been so nobody exactly fallows the rules or knows about them its funny how simple crossing the street really is but its anything but simple in reality. Many people choose to jay walk if its safe to do so, this is typical on Shattuck at alston especially and makes sense for efficiency but isn't very safe or lawful. If the hand is flashing/Counting down dont cross!

He said he didn't want to talk about it. He wasn't in a very good mood. I told him that people had asked about him on a web local news site. He said, "People want to know how I'm doing? I need a car. I need somewhere to put my stuff in. To get off the streets. I don't want to sit around starving in public." I thought to myself, "Who do I think I am? A Girl Scout leader? Pollyana?" I realized my upbeat, cheery tone was really not what was needed just then. I said I couldn't help him with a car. "People want to know how I'm doing?" he said again. "Tell them that." I said, "I will." I turned to walk away, knowing only too well that the real needs that exist, yes, right here in our lovely, excellent neighborhood, are great and once you start giving you'll find it's difficult to get out of. He did say, "Thank you," as I left. He doesn't look like he's starving. But he's right about being out in public more than he would like to be. As a reasonable human being, I have to ask myself, what sort of person finds himself in that position? Ex con? Mental illness? Mind-blown Vet? Drugs? Alcohol? Incapacitated by an accident? An unforgivable act? Some combination of the above? Jesus did say, "The poor you shall have always with you." What would you do?

I agree Shattuck, especially right in front of the fire station is the scariest street around.

I am not disabled, but I am terrified of crossing streets nowadays because there are too manyRead More careless and aggressive drivers who act is if red lights, speed limits, and crosswalks either don't exist or don't apply to them. Shattuck in particular has become a nightmare to cross. Sometimes I have counted over 30 cars going by before one stops for the crosswalk. What we need is far more law enforcement - the tickets written would more than pay for the cost of hiring extra officers.
