Student Shot by Police at UC Berkeley Had Turned His Life Around

Christopher Travis from Berkeley was once a suicidal drop-out, until he landed a job as a security officer and decided to apply to UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

More information is coming to light about the UC Berkeley business undergraduate student for allegedly refusing to put down a gun he was carrying in his backpack.

Christopher Travis led a troubled life throughout his young adult years — lacking direction, dropping out of school, and even attempting suicide by overdosing on pills.

But about six years ago, Travis got a job as a security officer with Allied Barton. An award video from the company tells the story of Travis' life turnaround, claiming that Allied Barton "not only provided direction, but saved his life."

Travis changed, according to the video, after working up the company ranks as a security officer, and decided to go to school. With a GPA of 3.85, Travis applied and was accepted to UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Travis was also a volunteer for VITA, an organization that provides free income tax assistance to needy individuals. His goal was to do an internship with the United Nations and pursue a career in international business, according to Allied Barton.
