Shooting Death Victim Is Berkeley Man

Berkeley resident Mikell Newell, 27, was identified Tuesday by Oakland police as the man fatally shot on 92nd Avenue in East Oakland early Sunday morning. Another man also was shot in the same incident but is expected to survive.

Oakland police Tuesday released the names of two men who were killed in separate shooting incidents in two different parts of the city more than 12 hours apart on Sunday.

Police said Mikell Newell, 27, of Berkeley, was fatally shot in the 1400 block of 92nd Avenue in East Oakland shortly after 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Another man was also shot in that incident but is expected to recover from his injuries, police said.

Police said Darvel McGillberry, 19, was fatally shot in the 2900 block of West Street in West Oakland at about 6:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Oakland police haven't released any information about the motives or suspects in either shooting.
