UC Student Uses Skateboard to Resist 2 Robbers on Campus

An 18-year-old UC Berkeley student used his skateboard to resist two robbers trying to take his iPhone Saturday night on campus and ended up losing his skateboard, UC police said Monday.

An 18-year-old male student used his skateboard to try to fend off two males who robbed him in the middle of the UC Berkeley campus Saturday night, campus police said today, Monday.

The student was sitting on a ledge on the east side of California Hall at 11:30 p.m. when he was approached by two males who asked the student for the time, police said in a crime alert.

The student responded, and one of the suspects demanded his property, police said.

Both suspects tried to grab his iPhone, and the victim "used
his skateboard as a shield and pushed the suspects away," the police alert said.

"The victim let go of the skateboard and ran away. The suspects fled with the skateboard."

The victim was not physically injured, according to police.

UC police released the following suspect descriptions:

  • Suspect #1:  A White male, 5’10” in height, with a medium build, with curly blonde hair, wearing all black clothing.
  • Suspect #2 – A White male, 5’10” wearing all black clothing with a hooded sweatshirt over his face.
Berkeley has seen a marked increase in nighttime street robberies this year, including a large number on and near campus.
