Resident Fights Off Burglar at Berkeley Home

A man who tried to break into an occupied Berkeley home on Dec. 24 was struck several times and injured by a resident of the home, police said. Police detained him at the scene and arrested him for alleged burglary.

A man tried to break into an occupied home on Hillegass Avenue in Berkeley's Elmwood District on the day before Christmas and was injured when the resident struck him several times, according to Berkeley police.

At 7:13 a.m. on Dec. 24, police responded to a home in the 2900 block of Hillegass where a man had attempted to break in through the front door, said Officer Jennifer Coats.

"The suspect attempted to burglarize the victim’s home by breaking the window to the front door," Coats said.

The resident was able to barricade the door and prevent the suspect from entering "by striking the suspect several times, causing him injuries," Coats said.

The suspect, identified by police as Mohammed Eddine, 46, of San Pablo, was detained by Berkeley police in front of the home and was arrested on suspicion of burglary upon completion of a police investigation, Coats said.
