Gabriel Weathersbee, 19, was arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 7-year-old

By Bay City News—

Police arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 7-year-old girl in Emeryville Monday afternoon.

The mother of the girl called police around 5 p.m. to report that a stranger had grabbed her daughter near the Powell Street Plaza Shopping Center next to Interstate Highway 80, Emeryville police said.

The mother was able to free her child from the man's clutches and he ran off on foot, police said.

Police responded to the area and the suspect, later identified as Gabriel Weathersbee, was found nearby and taken into custody, police said.

He was booked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on a charge of attempted kidnapping of a child under 14 years old.

He is being held on no bail, according to jail records, and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

The girl was not injured in the incident, police said.
