Berkeley Police Log, Week of Aug. 5

A sampling of calls handled by the Berkeley Police Department from Aug. 5 to 11.

Sunday, Aug. 5

11:30 p.m. – Receiving a report of a loud party on the 2300 block of Ellsworth Street, officers shut the festivities down.

Sometime between 1 and 7 a.m. – Window-smash auto burglary and theft of electronic equipment was reported on the 900 block of Regal Road.

Monday, Aug. 6

7:02 a.m. – A traffic hazard was reported on the 1300 block of Gilman Street. Officers found and removed a newspaper rack that had been filled with rocks.

Sometime between 1:25 and 1:40 a.m. – A suspect broke into a commercial business on the 1500 block of Shattuck Avenue through the rear door and stole cash. Spotted by an employee who was passing by, the suspect is described as a man of unknown race, 6 feet and 180 lbs. with a medium build and wearing a dark jacket.

Tuesday, Aug. 7

11:39 p.m. – Neighbors reported a loud party whose participants were talking loudly and breaking glass on the 2100 block of Los Angeles Street. Officers broke up the group and reported broken glass in the roadway to the public works department.

Sometime between 6:20 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. – A residential burglary and theft of a camera and a guitar was reported on the 1900 block of Hearst Avenue.

Wednesday, Aug. 8

9 a.m. – A window-smash burglary and theft of a DVD player and backpack were reported on the 1800 block of Hopkins Street.

8:41 p.m. – A resident reported possible gambling activity involving dice near James Kinney Park.

9:56 p.m. – A resident reported a suspicious circumstance on the 1500 block of Edith Street after seeing a vehicle with the engine running parked for two hours.

Thursday, Aug. 9

2:06 p.m. – A caller reported seeing a woman lying immobile on her back in the area of Ashby Avenue and Sacramento Street. A welfare check revealed the woman was not in danger.

Friday, Aug. 10

7:30 a.m. – The owner of a business on the 1700 block of Alcatraz Avenue reported that someone entered the business during the night, apparently through a locked window, and stole computer equipment.

Saturday, Aug. 11 

11:59 a.m. – Several individuals reported a man who appeared to be in his 20s was driving recklessly on the 1400 block of Fifth Street, speeding and squealing his tires. The vehicle was described as a red minivan with a roof rack. He managed to elude police.

12:51 a.m. – A resident reported vandalism on the 2900 block of Mabel Street after someone hurled a piece of concrete through a window.
