Police Blotter: 2 Armed Robberies, 2 Home Burglaries, Stolen Car, Assault with Rock

The Berkeley police log for June 23 - July 6 includes two armed robberies, one of an individual at Spruce and Cedar and one of a store on University, theft of a laptop and a TV in two home burglaries, and storekeeper hit with a thrown rock.

Sunday, June 23

Loud Reports, California Street/62nd Street – On Sunday, June 23, 2013 at approximately 1:16 a.m. a caller reported hearing five to six loud reports coming from the area of California Street and 62nd Street.  BPD responded to the area.  Their area check came up negative.  There was no reported damage.

Vandalism, 1200 Block of Ashby Avenue – On Sunday, June 23, 2013 between 3:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the victim’s vehicle was vandalized while it was parked in the 1200 block of Ashby Avenue.  The unknown suspect spray painted the victim’s vehicle.

Burglary, 2900 Block of Regent Street – On Monday, June 24, 2013 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. a residential burglary occurred in the 2900 block of Regent Street.  The unknown suspect gained entry through a locked rear window.  The suspect stole several items from the home including a laptop computer. 

Stolen Auto,  Rose Street/Arch Street – On Monday, June 24, 2013 at 11:17 a.m. the victim reported their vehicle stolen from the intersection of Rose Street and Arch Street.  The victim parked his vehicle on June 22, 2013 near the intersection.  The victim went to use the vehicle on the 24th and discovered it missing.  Taken was a gray 1993 Plymouth, Voyager. 

Tuesday, June 25

Traffic Hazard, 1300 Block of Hopkins Street – On Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at approximately 9:28 p.m. a resident reported a traffic hazard in the 1300 block of Hopkins Street.  A large tree branch broke and was blocking the roadway.  Officers arrived to assist and contacted the Public Works Department.  The hazard was cleared and the roadway opened up. 

Vandalism, 2000 Block of 9th Street – On Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at approximately 9:30 the victim reported that her vehicle was vandalized by an unknown person.  The victim’s vehicle was parked in the 2000 block of 9th Street.  During that time the suspect slashed the victim’s tires. 

Wednesday, June 26

Suspicious Circumstances, 1500 Block of Francisco Street – On Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at approximately 7:07 p.m. BPD officers were dispatched to a suspicious circumstances incident in the 1500 block of Francisco Street.  The caller reported hearing an alarm sounding from an unoccupied home in the area.  BPD officers responded to the location and check the residence.  They discovered a malfunctioning smoke detector from inside the home.  The property owner was contacted and advised of the problem. 

Thursday, June 27

Stolen Auto Recovered, 2000 Block of Emerson Street – On Thursday, June 27, 2013 at approximately 6:32 p.m. a reported stolen vehicle was located in the 2000 block of Emerson Street.  The vehicle was reported as possibly being abandoned in the block.  The vehicle had been parked for several days.  An officer was dispatched to check on the vehicle and discovered it had been reported stolen out of San Leandro Police Department.  The owner was contacted and the vehicle was returned.

Friday, June 28

Reckless Driving, Milvia Street/Allston Way – On Friday, June 28, 2013 at approximately 8:42 p.m. a caller reported a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of Milvia Street and Allston Way.  The caller reported a black Honda swerving in the area.  BPD officers responded to the area and conducted an area check.  Their area check was negative.

Saturday, June 29

Parking Violation, 2700 Block of Le Conte Avenue – On Saturday, June 29, 2013 at approximately 7:41 p.m. a caller reported several vehicles parked in the red zone.  An officer was dispatched to the location.  Several vehicles were observed parked in the red zone and parking citations were issued.  

Sunday, June 30

Trespassing, 1800 Block of San Pablo Avenue – On Sunday, June 30, 2013 at approximately 2:20 p.m. BPD received a report of a trespasser in the 1800 block of San Pablo Avenue.  The caller reported a subject sleeping on the property.  BPD officers arrived at the location and contacted the subject.  The subject was admonished and asked to leave the property. 

Robbery, Spruce Street/Cedar Street – On Sunday, June 30, 2013 at approximately 10:30 p.m. a robbery occurred near the intersection of Cedar Street and Spruce Street.  The victim was approached by the suspect, who was armed with a gun.  The suspect stole the victim’s wallet, cell phone and camera bag.  The suspect then fled the area on foot.

The suspect is described as:

“Black Male, unknown age, 6’, 200 pounds wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.”

Monday, July 1

Disturbance, Ashby Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way – On Monday, July 1, 2013 at approximately 11:57 a.m. BPD responded to a report of a road rage incident near the intersection of Ashby Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.  A BPD Officer arrived at the location and contacted the involved parties.  The dispute was settled and both parties left after speaking with the officer. 

Tuesday, July 2

Commercial Robbery, 900 Block of University Avenue – On Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at approximately 3:58 p.m. a robbery occurred to a business in the 900 block of University Avenue.  The suspect entered the business armed with a gun.  The suspect demanded cash.  The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money from the business.  He then fled on foot south from the business.

The suspect is described as:

“Male w/ light complexion, 5’9”, 136 pounds, red baseball hat, white shirt, black t-shirt and blue jeans, armed with a gun.”

Wednesday, July 3

Shoplifting, 1500 Block of University Avenue – On Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 1:51 p.m. an employee from a business in the 1500 block of University Avenue reported a shoplifting incident that had occurred a few days prior.  The employee reported that the suspect entered the store and left without paying for the items.  The suspect stole several energy drinks.

Residential Burglary, 1600 Block of Carleton Street – On Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 6:08 p.m. a resident called reporting their home broken into in the 1600 block of Carleton Street.  The unknown suspect entered the home through a window.  The suspect stole a television.  

Thursday, July 4

Assault, 1600 Block of Ward Street – On Thursday, July 4, 2013 an assault occurred in the 1600 block of Ward Street.  The suspect entered a store and attempted to leave without paying for several items.  When confronted by the store keeper, who recovered the items, the suspect became angry.  The suspect threw rocks through the window of the business, causing damage.  When the store keeper tried to stop him the suspect hit the victim in the face with rock causing non-life threatening injuries.   The suspect was detained at the scene by the store keeper and arrested by BPD. 

Friday, July 5

Stolen Vehicle, Allston Way/California Street – On Friday, July 5, 2013 at 5:31 p.m. the victim reported their vehicle stolen from near the intersection of Allston Way and California Street.  The victim parked their vehicle on the street two days prior.  The victim returned and discovered the vehicle missing.  Stolen was a 1997 Silver, Honda Accord.

Saturday, July 6

Vandalism, 2700 Block of Shattuck Avenue – On Saturday, July 6, 2013, 6:13 p.m. a reported vandalism occurred in the 2700 block of Shattuck Avenue.  It was reported that three unknown suspects climbed onto the roof of a business.  While on the roof using spray paint they defaced the property. 

The suspects are described as:

“White Male Adult, mid 20s, 5’10”, 140 pounds wearing a tan hat, red and yellow shirt and tan shorts.”

Loud Reports, 1800 Block of Alcatraz Avenue – On Saturday, July 6, 2013 at approximately 8:17 p.m. BPD responded to reports of loud reports in the area of the 1800 block of Alcatraz Avenue.  Officers checked the area, they did not locate any property damage or victims.
