One Person Killed in Apparent Hit and Run in Berkeley

One person was killed in an apparent hit and run accident about 5 a.m. this morning, Monday, on University Avenue near Interstate 80 in Berkeley, police said.

A male was killed in an apparent vehicle-versus-pedestian hit-and-run collision on University Avenue near 6th Street in Berkeley early this morning, Monday, according to Berkeley police.

At about 5:10 a.m., a Berkeley police officer on patrol discovered the body of male in the roadway in the westbound lanes of University west of 6th Street as the roadway begins to rise into an elevated overpass that goes over Interstate 80, according to Berkeley Police Officer Jennifer Coats.

The officer summoned the Berkeley Fire Department for medical assistance, and fire department responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene, Coats said.

"Based on a preliminary investigation it appears the subject was struck by a vehicle," Coats said. "The vehicle was not present at the scene.  We are investigating this as a hit and run collision at this time."

The Police Department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team, along with homicide investigators and the crime unit, are investigating the case, she said.

The westbound lanes of University between Frontage Road and Sixth Street were closed until 10:44 a.m. as police continued their investigation, Coats said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the body was found east of 6th Street. It was west of 6th Street. The article has been corrected.
