Berkeley's First Homocide of 2013: Fatal Shooting on Delaware Street

Berkeley police will not yet be releasing the identity of the 34-year-old male victim out of respect for those family or friends that still need to be notified of his passing, according to a police report.

A male victim who was found shot on a Berkeley street this morning died at the hospital, a police spokeswoman said.

Police received reports of shots fired around 11:08 a.m. and responded to Delaware Street just west of San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.

BPD officers arrived on scene and discovered a single victim down on the street, suffering from gunshot wounds according to a BPD release. The victim, a 34-year-old man was transported to a local hospital by the Albany Fire Department.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. BPD will not be releasing the victim’s name out of respect for those family or friends that still need to
be notified of his passing.

BPD Homicide detectives and officers are actively working the crime scene, canvassing the area, interviewing witnesses and following up on leads. Witnesses said a group of people was seen running away from the scene, but no other suspect information was immediately available, according to police.

Delaware Street remains closed through the afternoon between San Pablo Avenue and Tenth Street as police investigate the fatal shooting, Coats said.

BPD is urging anyone who may know anything about this homicide to
call the BPD Homicide detail at (510) 981-5741 or the 24 hour BPD non
emergency number of (510) 981-5900. If a person wishes to remain
anonymous, he/she can call the Bay Area Crimes Stoppers (BACS) at
(800)-222-TIPS (8477). Any information may be critical to solving this
crime.
