Man Fatally Shot in Berkeley

A man was shot and killed near 8th and Page Streets in Berkeley about 5:43 p.m. today, Sunday, according to Berkeley police. The man's name was not released. It was the city's fourth homicide this year.

A man was fatally shot in the 1400 block of 8th Street late Sunday afternoon, according to Berkeley police.

Police began receiving reports of gunshots in the area at 5:43 p.m., said Officer Jennifer Coats.

A male victim suffering from gunshot wounds was located near 8th and Page Street, she said. He was transported by the Berkeley Fire Department to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Coats said.


Officers arriving on the scene found an adult male victim with gunshot wounds at Eighth and Page, Coats said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Coats said. His name was withheld by police.

Police remained on the scene late Sunday night "investigating, canvassing for witnesses and looking for evidence," Coats said.

Berkeley police urge anyone who may know about this crime to call the Homicide Detail at 510-981-5741 or the 24-hour non-emergency number of 510-981-5900. Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous can call Bay Area Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).

"Any information may be critical to solving this crime," a department press release said.

It was the city's fourth homicide this year.

On Aug. 1, 24-year-old Dustin Bynum of Berkeley was shot and killed in the 1800 block of San Pablo Avenue.

A 26-year-old Berkeley resident, Jermaine Davis, was fatally shot in the 1800 block of Derby Street on July 17.

In the city's first homicide of the year, Zontee Jones, 34, was fatally shot at San Pablo Avenue and Delaware Street on Feb. 4.
