A homeless man was struck by an Amtrak train just north of Gilman Street in an apparent suicide on Friday.
Union Pacific Railroad Police received a report that an Amtrak train collided with a pedestrian at about 9:30 p.m. Friday, said Union Pacific Railroad Spokesman Aaron Hunt. Union Pacific Railroad owns the tracks.
Hunt did not have a name for the man.
Berkeley Patch received a tip about the death from an anonymous woman, who said the man was staying at the Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) short-term homeless shelter on Harrison Street. He was asked to leave for unknown reasons the day of his death, she said.
A BOSS-Harrison Street representative confirmed that the man stayed at the shelter but would not provide further details due to confidentiality issues. An Amtrak representative was not available for comment Monday afternoon.
