Is the Time Right for Tasers in Berkeley?

The Berkeley Police Association, a union which represents Berkeley police officers, has surveyed local voters to see how they feel about the use of stun guns.

The Berkeley Police Association, the union that represents Berkeley Police Department officers, has surveyed about 19,000 registered voters to see how they feel about the use of Tasers, according to an article published Thursday by the Oakland Tribune.

The BPD doesn't currently equip its officers with Tasers, which deliver a jolt of electricity to subdue persons that police see as violent or uncooperative.

Sgt. Chris Stines, the BPA president, told the Tribune that the survey "is just to get the conversation started. There has been a sense that there has been community opposition to Tasers, but we really don't know if that's true."
