Hit and Run Victim Identified by Coroner

The man killed in an apparent hit and run collision on University Avenue in Berkeley early Monday was identified Tuesday by the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau at John Patrick Miller, 46, a Berkeley area transient.

The pedestrian killed in the apparent hit and run collision on University Avenue in Berkeley was John Patrick Miller, 46, a transient who lived in the Berkeley area, the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau said today, Tuesday.

Miller's body was discovered about 5:10 a.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of University Avenue east of 6th Street where the roadway rises and becomes an overpass that goes over Interstate 80, said Deputy C. Frazier of the coroner's bureau, which is part of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department. The location is near Spenger's restaurant, he said.

Berkeley police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was hit by a vehicle, said Police Officer Jennifer Coats. Coats said Friday that the investigation is continuing and that no updates have been announced.
