DUI Checkpoint in Berkeley Tonight
Berkeley police are deploying a DUI checkpoint tonight, Thursday, and early Friday morning. The checkpoint comes a day after a Danville woman died from injuries she received when hit by a suspected DUI driver last week.
Berkeley police announced they are conducting another DUI checkpoint tonight, Thursday, from 8 p.m. to about 2 a.m. tomorrow morning.
The driving-under-the-influence checkpoint will be deployed on San Pablo Avenue at Haskell Street, police said.
In related news, a Danville woman hit by suspected DUI driver last week died yesterday from her injuries, authorities said today. Diana Gregory, 53, was struck by a car near Tassajara Lane, about half a mile from her home around 8:45 p.m. August 19.

Berkeley police staged a DUI checkpoint on University Avenue on Aug. 16.
"Driving impaired is extremely dangerous and the consequences are serious and real," the department said. "Impaired drivers can kill themselves and others, and the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired are significant."
More than 10,000 people were killed nationwide in a traffic collisions involving impaired drivers in 2010, according to police.

Funding for the anti-DUI campaign comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to police.
