DUI Checkpoint in Berkeley Friday Night
Berkeley police will be checking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs at a checkpoint on San Pablo Avenue in North Berkeley Friday night and early Saturday morning.
You don't want to drink and drive anytime anywhere, especially in Berkeley on Friday night.
Berkeley police will be conducting a DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoint on San Pablo Avenue near Jones Street from 8 p.m. until about 2 a.m., the department said. DUI can result not only from alcohol but also drug use.
"Driving impaired is extremely dangerous and the consequences are serious and real," according to a police department news release. "Impaired drivers can kill themselves and others, and the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired are significant.
"During 2010, more than 10,000 people were killed nationwide in a motor vehicle traffic collision involving impaired drivers."
Berkeley police urge anyone who sees a drunk driver to call 911.
