Cyclist Killed in Collision with Dump Truck

Police seek witnesses to accident at Bancroft and Fulton.

A cyclist lost his life this afternoon in a collision with a dump truck at Bancroft Way and Fulton Street, Berkeley police reported.

At about 3:38 p.m., police dispatch received calls reporting a serious accident. Officers found the cyclist, a man in his 60s, lying in the roadway on Bancroft Way west of Fulton Street.  The truck driver did not realize he had struck the man, but returned to the scene after being alerted by a passing motorcyclist.

Berkeley Fire Department paramedics tended to the bicyclist and transported him to a local trauma center, where he was pronounced dead by physicians. The accident is under investigation. The sequence of events is not clear, said Sgt. Mary Kusmiss in a press statement. The driver of the truck has been cooperative throughout the initial investigation and is not under arrest.

The police are asking for the community’s help with this investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the non-emergency dispatch line at (510)981-5900.

The name of the cyclist is being withheld until family members can be notified.

So sad. It's scary out there for cyclists, but I see many who don't follow the rules of the road too. Rest in peace, and condolences to this man's family.

This terrible tragedy was bound to happen because of Berkeley's aggressive drivers and a vast majority of cyclists (mostly students) who blatantly disregard traffic laws. This observation, however, is not to accuse the professor &/or truck driver of negligence at this time. It should serve to, though, to promote much more diligence to all vehicular traffic. A man has been killed, and our hearts reach out to his family in this time of intense grief.

The name is weirdly spelled, but not this weird. It's Caffe, not Caffee. I've only typed these wordsRead More a thousand times.

I could blame those cut-ups, typographers in the basement typing onto big circular steel plates
